Config vs Customize - Salesforce Implementation Strategy

I see too many Salesforce Implementation either fail (or) sub-optimal (or) does not take full advantage of all the features of the Platform. Hence i am sharing my framework which can help guide how we can optimize implementations.

Key Considerations:

A. Rethinking Our Salesforce License Selection

Navigating the intricacies of Salesforce licenses is no small feat.

Identifying the ideal licenses that align perfectly with our project's scope is crucial for its triumph.

B. Critical Assessment of Business Needs: The Cornerstone of Successful Implementation

  1. What objectives is the client aiming to achieve?

  2. How does their approach deviate from the standard industry processes?

  3. Is there a direct correlation between the requested features and Salesforce's existing business processes?

  4. When considering a bespoke process, have we evaluated its impact on future Salesforce feature adoption?

C. Prioritizing Education on Salesforce's Built-in Capabilities

  1. Have we dedicated ample time to familiarize ourselves with Salesforce's out-of-the-box (OOTB) functionalities through workshops or similar educational efforts?

  2. Have we clarified the distinctions between deploying features on a SaaS platform versus an IaaS platform to our business users?

  3. Have discussions been held about the long-term consequences of opting for custom designs or solutions?

D. Adherence to Salesforce's Recommended Practices

  1. Are we in line with the recommended best practices provided by Salesforce Architect Resources, including the Decision Guide?

E. Choosing the Right Partners for Our Salesforce Journey

  1. Have we selected partners with the appropriate expertise for our Salesforce implementation, regardless of the industry?

  2. Do these partners and our team possess a robust strategy for communication with leadership and the necessary project sponsorship for success?

F. Project Timeline and Implementation Strategy

  1. Have we accurately projected the timeline for our project implementation?

  2. Recognizing that a compressed timeline can lead to compromises, resulting in less than ideal architectural design.

G. Flexibility and Feedback Integration in Business Requirements

  1. How open are we to adapting our business requirements?

  2. Is there room for critical feedback, and how is it incorporated into our process?
